History of the Saint Louis Cardinals

HISTORICAL:

The baseball team in St. Louis has a rich history. In 1892 the Cardinals were known as the St. Louis Browns. They were a part of the American Association, which was similar to the American League we have now, the Browns rejoined the 12 team national league. In 1898, the Robinson brothers (Frank and Stanley) bought the St. Louis baseball franchise. They then changed the name of the franchise to the Perfectos and changed their colors to red and white. Finally in 1900, they officially changed the name of the team to the Cardinals because of type of red they chose for the uniform. One lady said “Oh, what a lovely shade of cardinal”, and the name stuck. In 1911 ownership was passed down to Frank Robinson’s daughter. In 1917 the team hired Branch Rickey as president. In 1920 Rickey became manager and led them to their first World Series win which took place in 1926. Highlights of the teams next 80+ years include the following. In 1937 Joe Medwick won the Triple Crown with 31 homers, 154 runs batted in and a .374 batting average. He is the last National League player to accomplish this. In 1950 the Cardinals played there first night opener. In 1967 the Cardinals won101 games in their pursuit of the National League pennant. In 1996 Tony LaRussa came over to St. Lois from the Oakland Athletics bring along Mark McGwire. In 1998 McGwire broke the all-time single-season record with 70 home runs. His competition against Sammy Sosa for the homerun record brought attention to the Cardinals.(Cardinal Timeline) In 2006 the most unlikely playoff teams too win won. They surprised everyone because they’ve had the lowest regular season record (83-78) ever for a playoff team. This World Series gave the Cardinals 10 championships in franchise history. They are second all time in World Series championships. They’re 16 behind the New York Yankees. Right now, Albert Pujols is making the next moments in history for the Cardinals.(Sports Illustrated)

St. Louis Cardinals: GEOGRAPHICAL NOTES

The original Busch stadium was built in 1966. It opened six months after the Gateway Arch had been built just a few blocks away. The stadium was perfectly symmetrical from the field to the seats. The walls were uniform height and the three decks were also the same. After eleven seasons, the stadium improved conditions like replacing real grass with artificial turf. . Improvements continued in the 1990’s with things like fences were lowered and brought closer to the plate along with going back to grass from the turf. There are 96 open arches that circle the field under the roof. They are supposed to represent the sixty story gateway Arch outside the stadium. Busch Stadium was one of the first baseball stadiums in the whole country to be directly downtown.(Ballparks)

A new stadium, also called Busch Stadium, was built in 2006. It was built adjacent to the old stadium. In their first season in the new stadium, they won the World Championship.

The Cardinals and SOCIETY

The Saint Louis Cardinals bring the real feel of baseball as the great American pasttime to the people. The St. Louis Cardinals have had numerous players inducted into the baseball hall of fame. They have exactly 36 players and 9 managers for a total of 45 members. Most of their hall of framers were fielders a few big names include Lou Brock, Stan “The Man” Musial, and Ozzie Smith. A few big name pitchers include Jerome “Dizzy” Dean, Bob Gibson, and Denton “Cy” Young. Some well known managers are Rogers Hornsby, Branch Rickey, and Albert “Red” Schoendienst.(Media Guide)

The Cardinals have had tremendous post-season and World Series success. They have won 10 World Series championship. That is the second most behind The New York Yankees who have 26. This success gives fans across the nation lots to cheer about, get involved with and buy merchandise.
